Samuel Johnson was a wit

November 26, 2009

Sandhurst anyone?

Ever notice how former colonies take on the military style of their former colonial overlords? Was in Bermuda a few days ago and this was crashingly evident. Bermudian soldiers lined up to practice for the Queen’s visit on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 to St. Georges. Caps with red bands, lots of foot stomping and NCOs shouting a stream of indecipherable orders like a Monty Python sketch condensed in the humid air. You’d think that once having thrown off their colonial masters, small nations would junk every last vestige of the former bosses and design and make entirely new uniforms. But I guess when you have all those unis hanging around, you just can’t just throw ’em out. New nations are usually poor nations. Still, it would be nice to see them show some spine and go in an entirely new direction. But inertia seems to explain a great deal of human behavior.
