Carina Nebula used to test astronaut candidates

April 26, 2010

NASA recently released this image of the Carina Nebula and the official NASA press release said, in part,

“This craggy fantasy mountaintop enshrouded by wispy clouds looks like a bizarre landscape from Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” or a Dr. Seuss book, depending on your imagination.”

Turns out that NASA has been using the Hubble Space telescope image to test astronaut candidates’ psychological make-up.  When asked what the nebula reminded them of, candidates said, “A horsey,” “A Goldman Sachs bonus,” Gwyneth Paltrow, post cleanse,” “A 3-D model of the choreography for Jean Madeleine Marie Schneitzhoeffer’s ballet, Les Filets de Vulcain,” “Sistine Chapel smoke,” “George W. Bush’s autobiography,” “a puppy,” “St. Paul on the road to Damascus,” “chicken and biscuits,” “poop,” “a 1964 VW beetle, green with tan interior,” “Jon Voight.”

All of the candidates who gave the answers above were accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program.
